Absurd Humour and Existential Depth in Beckett’s Happy Days

How can you call it a happy day when you’re buried up to your waist in earth? That question is asked – and answered – in Samuel Beckett’s iconic masterpiece Happy Days, which can be experienced at MCH Herning Congress Center on 4 February 2026.

Here we meet Winnie, who, despite her absurd situation, refuses to give up. With her handbag by her side and her husband Willie nearby, she clings to her optimism and daily routine, even as she slowly sinks deeper into the ground.

Beckett’s play is both tragicomic and thought-provoking. It is a story about the indomitable human will to find meaning and joy – even in the most hopeless circumstances.

In the role of Winnie, Lone Rødbroe captures the character’s blend of naivety, strength, and desperation with both warmth and precision.

Happy Days is more than a classic – it is an experience that will make you laugh, reflect, and perhaps even see yourself in Winnie’s unyielding life force in the face of the absurd, when Happy Days is performed at MCH Herning Congress Center on 4 February 2026.
