La Traviata

Saturday, 22 November 2025.

Before the performance, there will be a free opera introduction by Den Jyske Opera at 6:30 p.m.

Experience one of opera history’s most moving love stories when Verdi’s La Traviata is performed at MCH Herning Kongrescenter on 22 November 2025.

Violetta is a free and strong woman, a famous courtesan who enjoys the company of the upper class – but she is also seriously ill. When she meets the young poet Alfredo, she experiences true love for the first time. They flee the city to live out their love in peace, but society’s judgment and family honour come knocking. A heartbreaking choice forces Violetta to give up everything, and when Alfredo finally understands why, it may be too late.

A story of love, sacrifice, and social condemnation

La Traviata is based on Alexandre Dumas’ novel The Lady of the Camellias, and Verdi’s moving music elevates the drama to unforgettable heights. Over the years, the opera has inspired countless films and productions – including Pretty Woman and Moulin Rouge – and its themes of love’s struggle against norms and prejudice remain deeply relevant.

The performance is staged in three acts and sung in Danish. It is therefore a perfect opportunity for both seasoned opera-goers and newcomers who want to experience opera.

Look forward to an evening of grand drama, heartfelt music, and emotional depth when La Traviata takes the stage at MCH Herning Kongrescenter on 22 November 2025.

Verdi composed La Traviata in 1853, based on Alexandre Dumas’ novel The Lady of the Camellias, about the courtesan Marie Duplessis. Both the novel and Verdi’s opera have since inspired many interpretations, including the films Pretty Woman and Moulin Rouge.

Verdi lived for 15 years with soprano Giuseppina Strepponi before they married in 1859. She already had two children out of wedlock with two different men. Like Violetta and Alfredo in the opera, they also experienced society’s condemnation. It even went so far that Verdi cut ties with his parents in order to live with the woman he loved.
