Alhedestien, bicycle and walking path

The railway path between Viborg and Herning is also known as Alhedestien (cycle route no. 21) and is built on the disused Herning-Viborg railway line. The continuous trail system between Viborg and Herning is approximately 49 kilometres long and is great for hiking, cycling and horseback riding.

The trail starts at Middagshøjvej by the bridge to the railway station in Viborg and ends at Knudsvej in Herning. South of Viborg you cycle into the large forests at Hald Ege and just a few hundred metres away is Hald Sø in the middle of Dollerup Bakker, where the ice age has created large, deep gorges in the landscape.

You avoid the steep climbs on the railway path itself because the railway tracks were originally built on embankments and through excavated tunnel valleys so that the old locomotives could make the trip.

The history of the Alhedestien railway line

The Alhedestien was originally a railway that was inaugurated in 1906 as part of plans to cultivate the land on Alheden. In 1977, freight transport ceased and in 1995 the route was officially opened as a cycling, hiking and horse riding route. The trail is 49 km long and starts at the railway station in Viborg and ends at Knudsvej in Herning.

The path is 1.8-3.0 metres wide with an asphalt and concrete pavement.

Take a rest in Frederiks

On the route is the town of Frederiks, where the town's civic association has renovated the old warehouse by the railway path. Here you can take a rest from 09.00 to 17.00 every day of the week in June and August when walking/cycling on the Alhedsstien. You can use the toilet and are welcome to use the kitchen to make a cup of coffee or tea and eat your packed lunch.
