Abildaa Brunkulsleje (Abildaa brown coal field)

Abildå Lignite Mine is located 15 km from Herning. It is a living museum, founded by former lignite workers with the purpose of sharing the story of one of the major workplaces during the lignite era. Here, you can see and learn about daily life in the mine, as well as how the excavation process was carried out.

There is also the opportunity for a lovely stroll through this unique natural area.

The Working Museum, Abildå Lignite Mine, was founded by former coal workers and has been developed over the past 30 years.

Over the years, various old machines have been added, and the museum is run by dedicated volunteers.
As the only place in Denmark, you can experience how the coal was mined and follow the process of extracting the millions-of-years-old material.

Furthermore, you can see how the lignite miners (brunkulsbisser) work at Abildå. Nothing has changed since back then, as the same old machines and tools are still in use.

Visitors also have the option to buy lignite to take home.

Additionally, you can enjoy the nature that has flourished in the nutrient-poor sand and water-filled pits left behind around 70 years ago. The nature trail around the area is approximately 2 km long.

You are welcome to bring your own food, and a covered hall is available for use.

Live demonstrations during the summer - see dates.
