Potato Holiday at Frilandsmuseet Herning
October 15, 2026, from 10 am to 1 pm, families can experience the traditional Danish potato holiday at Frilandsmuseet Herning. Dig up potatoes, make potato prints on fabric and enjoy a relaxed day together with hands-on activities in historic surroundings.
Potato Holiday at Frilandsmuseet Herning takes the whole family back to a time when the Danish autumn school break was known as the potato holiday.
In the past, children had time off school to help with the demanding work of harvesting potatoes on local farms. At Frilandsmuseet Herning, the work is much more relaxed. Children and adults can help dig up potatoes in the museum’s vegetable garden and take part in bringing in the harvest.
Indoors, you can create your own unique potato prints on fabric. The museum will also bring out traditional games, and the carving benches will be available.
The event takes place at Frilandsmuseet Herning, Museumsgade 32, and is free for the whole family.
