Carl-Henning in Angligården

Angligården was drawn out of an idea sketch of C. Th. Sørensen.

THE PLAY OF IMAGINATION AROUND THE WHEEL OF LIFE

Since 2021, you can experience the site-specific sound work OPHAV by composer Ditte Rønn. The work is activated via motion sensors and surrounds you with sound from 14 speakers placed on the roof of the building – in interplay with the ceramic artwork.

Architecturally, Angligården varies in width, due to both aesthetic and production-related factors. When it was built, Angligården was used as a shirt factory. Another special purpose behind the unconventional design was to create space in the inner courtyard for a large artwork. In 1965, Carl-Henning Pedersen was commissioned to create the piece, which became The Play of Imagination on the Wheel of Life. The ceramic frieze is 220 meters long and the artwork changes character with the seasons

Carl-Henning Pedersen played a central role in Danish art life in the 20th century and was a co-founder of the COBRA movement. He worked closely with shirt manufacturer and art patron Aage Damgaard, and it was precisely this collaboration that laid the foundation for his own museum, which opened in Herning in 1976.

Both OPHAV and The Play of Imagination on the Wheel of Life are freely accessible and can be experienced all year round.

ANGLIGÅRDEN

Angligården was designed based on a concept sketch by landscape architect C. Th. Sørensen. Viewed from above, the building forms a small 'a' in the landscape.
