Big sporting events are held every year in Herning, and since 2008, Herning has been the host of the 2009 World Wrestling Championships, 2010 Womens European Handball Championship, the UEFA Euro U-21s in 2011, the 2012 European Table Tennis Championships, the first stages of Giro d'Italia 2012, the European Volleyball Championship 2013, the Men’s European Handball Championship 2014, among many others.

In 2018, Herning hosted the IIHF World Championship along with Copenhagen.
